Obercom (Observatory for the Media)

OberCom's Mandate (2006-2009)

The Observatory for the Media (OberCom) is located in Lisbon, Portugal, at the Palácio Foz, its working and publication languages are Portuguese and English. Since 1999 that OberCom is a reference in the analysis of the media and communications environment in Portugal.

OberCom's annual statistical publications on the media and communications market and its, peer-reviewed, journal Observatorio(OBS*) are references in the Portuguese Media and Telecom landscape, from academia to market players.

During the last decade media markets and media users have witnessed a vast change in almost every area, from newspapers to telecommunications, from Internet to Radio, from Videogames to Television and Cinema.

All those forces in action have transformed, and are transforming, media industries in Portugal and Worldwide. Much as elsewhere, media and telecom companies in Portugal are either innovating or are inducing short term defensive policies towards the challenge by new firms.

Audiences have changed too, and are changing. They are modifying the ways in which they used to connect with the media and even its communication models. More importantly, users are changing the media because they use them in different ways, combining them in new networked media practises.

Given the widespread role of the media today in many diversified areas of our economies, policies and social life, the need to foster knowledge in this field of research has increased too.

OberCom’s board has been given a three year mandate (2006-2009) and internationalization of its research activities has been considered one of its main objectives.

Our aim is to promote OberCom's excellence in the field of Television, Cinema, Radio, Newspapers, Internet and Mobile Networks (from Wifi to Mobile Phones) studies. Our mission is 'to become a key partner in the world's research networks in Media, and in informing policy and generating debate'. We intend to focus our attention in Portugal but also extend our research to other geographical areas, such as Europe, America, Asia, and Africa.

We hope that the monthly OberCom Newsletter and the Observatorio(OBS*) Journal might constitute helpfull tools for the work of all those that share with us common research interests.
